Meet the Chula Vista Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

Our Chula Vista crew is the same group you’ll see in Otay Ranch, Eastlake, and up through Bonita. We don’t rotate strangers through your neighborhood. When you call (619) 901-2874, you get one of these four people on your property, in our truck, wearing the same uniform they’ve worn for years. What holds us together isn’t a handbook. It’s the K.E.Y.S. code we train under: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. Carl Dutton started that in 1984, and we still run every job by it.

Our People

Carl Dutton, Owner

I’m the one who answers when the phone rings at 2 a.m., and I’m the one who started this company in 1984 because I couldn’t stand watching homeowners get talked into whole new door systems when a spring and some honesty would’ve fixed it. I spent my first ten years doing every job myself, torsion and extension springs, chain-drive openers, custom wood installs in Rolling Hills Ranch back when that was all dirt lots. I still go out on calls when we’re stacked up or when a customer specifically asks. I carry a 1978 Stanley tape measure my father gave me. It’s bent at the tip and the lock doesn’t always catch, but I’ve replaced three “better” ones and I keep coming back to it. My name is on every 90-Day Done Right Promise we put in writing, and I mean that literally.

Marcus T., Lead Technician

Marcus has been with us since 2011, which in this trade means he’s seen just about every failure mode a garage door can throw at you. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie opener systems, and he’s the technician we send when a job’s been botched by someone else and the homeowner needs it sorted without any more drama. Marcus grew up in Castle Park, so he knows which Chula Vista neighborhoods built in the 1980s got the original Wayne Dalton torquemaster systems that are finally aging out now. He keeps a coffee can of old roller bearings in his truck to show customers what worn ones look like compared to new. He says it saves ten minutes of explaining.

Elena R., Senior Installer

Elena runs our new door and replacement installations, which means she’s the one measuring to the eighth of an inch in your driveway, ordering from Clopay or Amarr or Raynor, and then coming back to hang the system level and quiet. She came to us from commercial dock work, so she’s used to doors that weigh ten times what your residential system does. That background shows in how she braces her tracks and how she talks homeowners through their options without pushing the most expensive panel. Elena lives in Otay Ranch with her two kids, and she’s the reason we started offering evening measure appointments, because she pointed out that most families aren’t home at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday. She hand-writes her install notes in block letters. Says she’s never trusted her own cursive.

David K., Service Coordinator

David is the live voice you get when you call (619) 901-2874, day or night, weekend or holiday. He’s been dispatching our Chula Vista trucks since 2016, and he knows which technician has which parts on which truck, which matters when someone’s spring snaps at 6 p.m. and they can’t get their car out for morning shift work. David grew up in Bonita, and he still won’t send anyone up the steep driveways off Telegraph Canyon Road without warning them first. He schedules the $89 Seasonal Tune-Ups, applies the senior and veteran 5% discounts, and writes up the $50-off repair coupons. He’s the one who makes sure your flat price is stated before any work begins, because he used to do billing for a different company and he saw what surprise invoices do to people.

Javier M., Apprentice Technician

Javier joined us in 2023 after four years as a maintenance mechanic at a food processing plant in National City. He’s working his way through our journeyman program under Marcus, learning torsion spring winding, cable drum setup, and safety sensor alignment on every major brand we service. He’s already factory-familiar with Craftsman and Wayne Dalton systems, and he’s the technician most likely to have the exact roller or hinge you need on his truck because he over-prepares his stock sheets every morning. Javier lives in Eastlake and coaches youth soccer on Saturdays. He once spent twenty minutes explaining to a homeowner in Terra Nova why their door was making a specific clicking sound, then fixed it with a $4 gear kit and wouldn’t let them tip him. We’re working on that part.

One Standard, Every Job

The K.E.Y.S. code isn’t something we frame in the office. It’s how we decide who to hire, how to train, and when to walk away from a shortcut that would save an hour but cost us a callback. Every technician here is background-checked and uniformed, every truck carries springs, cables, and openers so most jobs finish in one visit, and every completed job gets the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork to file, no dispute to navigate, no argument about whose fault it was. Carl Dutton put that in place in 1984, and the four of us enforce it on every call we run in Chula Vista, from the coast up to the 125.

We don’t do phone trees. We don’t do after-hours answering services that read from a script. When you call (619) 901-2874, you get David or you get Carl, and if you need someone out tonight, we’ll tell you honestly whether that’s us or whether the fix can wait for morning without making things worse. That’s the square deal we’ve been offering for 42 years. We’re still here because it works.
